Rainy Days and Mondays

Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down – so say the lyrics to that old song.

So, I’m guessing if Rainy Days/Mondays are supposed to ‘get people down,’ a Monday when it rains (like it did today) is like a doubly whammy; a proverbial slap in the face.

But really…why is that?

I get the Monday part…end of a great weekend…lots of fun with friends and family…uplifting football game…downtime…sleep in. Etc. But in a year with copious rainfall totals, you’d think we’d be accustomed to the precip by now.

This year, we had showers all the time - even when it wasn’t supposed to be wet.

Remember July 4th?

No, I think this must reflect a deeper blow to the psyche than mere wetness. This blog is dedicated to the folks who have fallen and can’t get up. It is written to encourage anyone who has a deep case of the blues on this fine day.

If you are feeling down on this drizzly Monday, I have a few tips that may help to make things better.

First, no matter how bad it feels on this Monday, remember someone else has it worse. All you need to do is spend 10 minutes with the news and you’ll be convinced of this fact.

Second, start thinking of all your many blessings. When you begin to count them, it doesn’t take long for you to realize how lucky you are.

Third, do something active; positive. Start a project. Go for a walk (or do some other sort of exercise).  Join a club. Volunteer for a cause. The key is not the what. The key is just doing something that will make you feel good.

It won’t take long at all for you to see that things aren’t so bad after all. Think of it as ‘liquid sunshine.’

At the end of the day, Monday will become Tuesday and the storm front that brought the cloudburst will pass. It will leave behind a clean, crisp new day. If you didn’t let the rainy Monday defeat you, you’ll be ready to take on the new day with a new fervor that will ensure success.
