After we finished the New England portion of our 2026 vacation, we headed north to Quebec City. Lisa and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary earlier this spring. Our honeymoon trip took us to Quebec City 40 years ago.
So, it seemed appropriate for us to retrace our steps as a part of our on-going anniversary commemoration.
Because the historic district of Quebec City is a UNESCO site, very little has changed since we visited in 1986. According to the UNESCO website:
"The area of the Historic District of Old Québec, designated by the provincial authority as the site patrimonial du Vieux-Québec (Old Québec heritage site), is legally protected under the Province of Quebec’s Cultural Property Act, which was adopted in 1963. Its boundaries were established by provincial decree in 1964.
"Since its inclusion on the World Heritage List in 1985, a number of buildings in Old Québec have been added to the list of properties protected under the Cultural Property Act, including the Site historique et archéologique de l’Habitation-Samuel-De Champlain, the Ursuline Convent of Québec and the archaeological reference collection of Place Royale."
Anyway, as it applies to us, that is a comforting thought.
Of course, the waterfront area adjacent to Old Town is dominated by the impressive Chateau Frontenac. Part of our visit included a stroll thru its lobby.
Other highlights of our short side-trip:
- Shopping for Canadian treats and trinkets
- A walking tour of the Old Town area
- Enjoying a meal at one of the restaurants we visited in 1986
