Wedding Vows

Thirty years ago, weddings were fairly predictable.

The bride wore white; her bridesmaids wore some pastel shade of something. The guys wore black tuxes (or gray). There was a preacher. There was a church. There were guests. There was a cake (two if you were lucky).

When children of the 80s said their wedding vows, you pretty much stuck to a script.

I’m no wedding planner – trust me – but the notion of weddings these days seems to be: “Anything Goes.”

An article came across my yahoo feed recently discussing the latest trend – ‘gotcha’ weddings. A bunch of unsuspecting folks are invited to some gathering and then, presto…out comes the bride and groom in the guise of party hosts. Next thing you know, a garden variety Super Bowl bash turns into nuptials.

Ambush Weddings.

Here’s another take on the topic. Bride shows up for an engagement party and founds out she’s at ‘the real thing.’

Gotcha!

I’m all for surprises and all. I think this may be taking it too far.

I remember a few years ago when the big idea was ‘destination weddings.’ Schlamp everyone down to the nearest beach and say “I do” by the dunes. Or better yet on a cruise ship going by.

These surprise parties take the whole notion of ‘outside the box’ to a new level.

I think these ideas are cool and all but, you know what? I kind of enjoyed the way Lisa and I did it on April 19, 1986.

Tomorrow is April 19 and time to celebrate another milestone. So, let me take this Coach Jeff opportunity to say to my lovely wife, “Happy Anniversary!”
