I had the opportunity to have lunch with a dear friend today. It had been many years since we had gotten together.
It was fun to be able to catch up with my friend, Bryan.
There are certain pals with whom you can meet up after a long period of time and know, for certainty, that you’ll slip right back into the conversation just like no time had passed. He is one of those friends.
And indeed, it didn’t take many minutes at all before we were both in stitches as we enjoyed our tasty lunch.
As we do, we talked about mutual acquaintances and old buddies. We cracked a couple of our standard jokes from ‘back in the day’ and we also learned the highlights each others’ lives from the past couple of years.
Honestly, neither of us could remember the last time we had gotten together. My best guess is five years ago but it could’ve been slightly more.
No matter. Like I said before, some friendships are timeless.
Some of the highlights of our lunch chatter:
- Updates about our families
- Talk about our current jobs
- A look back at the time we worked together some years ago during our Children’s Hospital days
One of our favorite ETCH stories – and we definitely covered this one today – was the time when he and I were working at the hospital’s benefit golf tournament. Ostensibly, we were photographing the event (and then posed for a picture which Bryan shared with me many years later).

We were at the check-in station when one of our co-workers unloaded a golf bag. He said to his co-worker, “I guess I’m the bag man.” His colleague grinned and put an ID on the handle and replied “That makes me the tag man.”
The two of us didn’t miss a beat, immediately thinking of that old song by the Who, “Behind Blue Eyes.” You know the part we were thinking of that day: “No one knows what it’s like to be the bad man.”
Leave it to us, though. In our warped version of the tune, the lyrics read “No one knows what it’s like to be the bag man…to be the tag man…”
We didn’t even make it to the end of the refrain before we were both laughing uncontrollably.
Both of us have the same sort of sense of humor; same ability for word play. And that day, on the golf course, was one of the classics.
We celebrated that memory today and much more.
