Ah to be young and in Southern Spain!
Warm people to greet you in the streets and warmer temperatures envelope you from above. What’s not to like about palm trees, ancient cathedrals, a crowd of new friends, blue skies and temperatures in the 70s every day?
Such is the story of Holly Gary’s spring break trip.
As her nine-month European experience heads into the homestretch, she had the opportunity to go with her roommate and another one of their teaching assistant colleagues to spend their spring break in southern Spain. First, they were in the town of Seville and later they made their way to a town called vejer de la frontera.
Holly told us it is a coastal town with nearby mountains. The proximity of the mountains to the ocean produces surreal howling winds.
In this photo she snapped, you can see the all white buildings dotting the hillsides. It looks like a painting. Or a scene from a James Bond film.
From the peaks, she says, you can see Africa.
Yeah folks, she isn’t in Kansas any more. (Technically, she’s only been to Kansas, once and that was a quick drive over into Kansas City, Kansas…but you know what I mean.).
I thought her stories about taking a weekend train trip to Paris were fantastic enough. Now this. Train to Paris; jet to Spain and voila (or velado), you are among the crowd at Carnival!
Her year abroad is definitely an experience with memories to last a lifetime.
The other day, for example, she toured the castle where Christopher Columbus once lived and she saw his tomb in Seville. COLUMBUS! Not Columbus, Ohio. Not Columbia, S.C. CHRISTOPHER ‘the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria’ COLUMBUS!
These facts amaze me.
From afar, I have always thought Spain would be a beautiful place to visit with citizens that are warm and welcoming. Holly has confirmed both facts to be true.
And now – as if her trip wasn’t amazing on its own – she’ll head back to Paris and spend a few more days. She has reservations at ‘The Cat Café.’ And, oh by the way, her best friend is going to fly over for a 10-day visit that will include her birthday celebration next week.
Here’s hoping that package we sent a couple weeks ago makes it on time! At any rate, she’s having so much fun, I’m sure she won’t be too distressed if the parcel arrives a day or two late.
Experience of a lifetime? You bet. And Holly is doing it all the right way – savoring every drop of her ongoing adventure!
