May Flowers

The arrival of May today is a very welcome sight. As I told you before, May is my favorite (non-Christmassy) month of the year. 

May is my month.

May is also Paul’s month. For a while, it looked like he might want to share days with me but then he picked his own.

It is:

• the month of final exams and grades and summer break
• the month to get things done
• the month of “Welcome home!”

This year, May is also the month of vacation.  Much as it was for us two years ago, it is the month for a grand adventure.

At churches across the country, there are always exciting activities in May. On the fields of youth baseball leagues, there are post-season tournaments.

Summer camps begin. Part-time jobs commence. So do commencement exercises. They commence too.

This is a busy month. The fifth month for the Kentucky Derby, Memorial Day and Mother’s Day (be sure to circle that one on your calendar).

Aside from those milestones, May is also the calendar host for VE Day, National Chocolate Chip Day and International Jazz Day, to name a few.

The month of May, according to Greek mythology and many associated sources, is named for the goddess Maia. The Romans agreed with this. They also had a goddess Maia. This makes things nice and convenient for Coach Jeff.

However you celebrate this glorious month, I hope you do it well. I hope you are full of joy and gusto and verve.
