Better late than never, right?
Lisa and I were raking leaves today and we noticed the area behind our house had exploded in a 64 Crayola splash of color. All through Farragut and the surrounding area, this color burst heralds the arrival of fall…albeit six weeks after the season turned (and just before the leaves fall).
In fact, after last week’s rain and wind, most of the leaves in our front yard are now down. Today, we tucked most of them away in the woods.
Maybe there is just one or two more left to come wafting gently down to the ground.

Indeed, just a week or so ago, we remarked to each other about how the fall colors were relatively drab this year.
This late color burst, along with the cool crisp temperatures and electric blue skies, are the reasons I love the fall season as I do. During most summers – not as much this year – the hot, humid weather and long dry spells really wears on people.
That period of time from late July to early September can be oppressive. During those years when you have day after day of 90+ temperatures, you just need a break. I think our falls are the payoff for suffering through the long, hot summer.
Fortunately, 2013’s was mild (and wet) by comparison.
Holly remarked to us, recently, that where she is in Northern France, there isn’t a fall per se. The weather is cool, of course. And since they are on the coast, they have constant humidity and frequent rain showers.
Speaking of the term ‘fall,’ she says her British roommate gets a kick out of hearing us use the expression. I guess they go with the official name. Autumn.
No matter what you call it, we love it.
This colorific explosion (followed by the quick tumble) reminds us that we are also about to herald the arrival of the holiday season. We just transition from one to the other, don’t we?
