Yesterday, I shared the first half of the Gary Top 10 Stories for 2012 (numbers 6-10). Today, I will unveil the Top 5 stories in the 2012 countdown but before I do, let’s take a look at the honorable mentions.
It was a very busy year for us. In a regular year, many of these stories could’ve made the Top 10.
Honorable Mentions -
Family Roadtrips – Whether it was a trip to Nashville to see the Titans, a trip to Atlanta to see the Braves or a trip to Memphis to see the town, we were fortunate to have been able to make many family roadtrips in 2012.
Holly’s Future Plans - Holly is on track to finish her undergraduate degree next spring. What will she do next? I know that will be one of our Top 10 stories for 2013.
Paul’s College Search – As his college search draws to a conclusion in the spring, I know this will be one of the Top 10 stories for 2013 as well.
Holly at Archer’s – Holly loved her time working at Archer’s BBQ at its Farragut location. She had a lot of fun with her co-workers. It is great Q, too! We all enjoyed the Archer’s Farragut location. It’s a bit of a drive up to Bearden or Rocky Hill (But we still do it…just not as frequently).
Roger Activities – I’ve written many times about our precocious orange tabby. Whether he is exploring the woods, bossing us around or just snoozing while resting on one of our laps, he has brought us lots of interesting conversation each year and 2012 was no exception.
Paul’s Chorus Activities – Another rich and busy year for the FHS chorus program.
Holly at ‘roo – Holly was back at Bonnaroo in 2012 and braved the elements to enjoy the four day music festival again.
And now…on with the countdown!
5. Lisa’s Work Accolades -
She won’t brag on herself so I will! Lisa had another great year at work in 2012. She received a promotion this year, a number of interesting committee assignments and she got some new courses to teach in 2012. She has become a valued member of the faculty as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Electronic Media at UT. She is well liked by students and colleagues and very well respected.
4. Tennessee Volunteers -
Lisa and I continued to be active in community service and church service in 2012. We serve as active members of the FHS Theatre Arts Boosters Board. That means, during show season, we roll up our sleeves and help the students as part of a strong volunteer structure.
At Farragut Presbyterian Church, my active service as a member of Session came to a conclusion at the end of January. Still, I continued to serve as a member of the New Member Development Committee and Lisa and I continue to participate in worship service as ushers and scripture readers. I have no doubt that in 2013, my service to the church will continue in some way.
3. Governor’s School for the Arts -
Paul was thrilled to find out in the spring that he had been accepted for the Governor’s School for the Arts at MTSU. It is a four week program lasting the entire month of June. Paul was accepted in both vocal music and drama but, of course, he chose the theatre option. As I mentioned yesterday, he was cast in a major role in the program’s musical. Also, he got a taste of what living on a college campus is like.
2. Douce France -
As Paul’s summer program was winding down, Holly headed to France for the start of her summer abroad program in Pau, France. She was there from late June to late July. She lived with a French family. She toured the countryside. She studied French language and culture at the local University. And she even took a side-trip to Spain. Holly also got to explore Paris at the beginning of her French adventure. She absolutely loved her experience.
And now…the number one Gary story for 2012. We’ve had some wonderful family vacations over the years. We’ve traveled from Canada to the Gulf Coast and everywhere you can imagine up and down the Eastern Seaboard. But, never had we experienced first-hand a chance to find out How are things on the West Coast?
Number 1. Save Me San Francisco -
Our 2012 Summer Vacation – which was actually in late, late spring – was probably the most adventuresome one we’ve experienced. Going to San Fran was fantastic. Certainly, being there – in the shadow of gigantic redwoods and in the mist of the marine layer – convinced you that you were in a place like none you had visited before. And to underscore that were the numerous landmarks we saw around the Bay Area – Alcatraz, cable cars and the Golden Gate Bridge. We had a wonderful vacation and made myriad memories to last a life time!
So, there you have it…the Gary Top 10 Stories for 2012. We had a rich and productive year with lots of many fantastic experiences. I’m hope you had a wonderful year, too!
