Logging the Blog

Every family has that beloved “Great Uncle Bud.” You know the one. He laughs a lot. He enjoys teasing younger folks. He loves to tell the same old stories…over…and over…and over.

I’m trying NOT to be that guy.

It occurred to me over the weekend that as the Coach Jeff Blog rolls on toward the year and a half mark, I have really started to run the risk of repeating myself. And how would I know if that were the case?

I decided that I needed to build a log…of the blog. You gotta love Excel! For some reason, I’ve always enjoyed cataloging, chronicling and characterization. I guess that comes from years of training to be a writer.

You’re only as good as your data.

Moving forward, I will continue to catalog past posts and once I am caught up, I will do a monthly update so I can keep track.

I began the process in earnest yesterday. I have made it about a third of the way through the archives. It has been a fun, albeit tedious, process. Still, after a while, the titles start to run together and look like Greek or something!

All kidding aside, I spent a lot of time yesterday going through title after title and thinking “Oh, yes. I remember that one.” One by one, I wrote them down.

For example, I don’t want to be writing, next fall, about strategies I’ve used for ripening green tomatoes.

Or unless I learn something new about the Swedes and Kalle Anka, I’m not sure a repeat post on that topic would be a good idea. Nor would it be good to repeat posts on ice stormsvolleyball, or trampolines.

I do write a LOT about my days in coaching. I enjoy that and I hope you do, too. Also, I will focus a lot on FHS, the school, school activities and the rush to graduation in May. Quite frankly, there will be lots of good material.

One thing I plan to do is to review the log occasionally so I don’t turn into ol’ Great Uncle Bud.
