Tell me…why is it, exactly that The Weather Channel has started naming winter storms? Especially when the National Weather Service (and basically everyone else) doesn’t do that?

Do I think we will really remember ‘The ice storm of '13’ by this name? Khan?
To me, that reminds me of, arguably, the best of the Star Trek movies, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Apparently, some of the weather guys were having fun mimicking Kirk’s famous call of “Khhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaannnnn!”
Apart from 1980s movie references, I doubt we’ll really associate this storm with that name. Sadly, we will associate it with the tragic death of a state trooper who was answering the call of duty this morning; or the accident suffered by of our county mayor who was showing support for his road crew by going out with them today. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all tonight.
There were a few wrecks. Some power outages. And, for the rest of us, we made it through this ice storm.
Around my house, there were numerous signs of the ice storm.

Ice everywhere…but no signs of Khan.
