NFL rocks on NBC

The Cowboys and Giants just kicked off the NFL’s 2012 season. Like the millions of other football fans, I am pumped up about the start of the season.

I’m NOT pumped up about the prospects for who might end the 2012 season. You may have seen some of the predictions.

Every prognosticator across the country has weighed in. What do these names remind you of?

  • Green Bay Packers
  • New England Patriots
  • Baltimore Ravens
  • New York Giants
  • Pittsburgh Steelers

Well, for one thing, they are some of the trendy picks for the winner of Super Bowl XLVII. Sadly, most of them were also trendy picks for Super Bowl XLVI, too. Each of them has won a Super Bowl in the last decade or so (so, okay, Baltimore’s title was technically 12 years ago in Super Bowl XXXV, winning over the…drumroll…New York Giants).

Every prognosticator I saw over the last week has that combination of five teams in the playoffs; most have one or both in the Super Bowl.

What is it I used to hear about the NFL and parity?

I’m not rooting for any of those teams to make it to the Super Bowl. Really, I’d love to see some different teams make it to the title game. I pine for the days of my childhood when the Oakland Raiders routinely won; I would love it if my Tennessee Titans were to be playing in February.

It doesn’t appear that the Raiders or Titans are poised make a deep run this season.

No one likes ‘same ol’/same ol’ (unless, of course, you are a fan of one of those teams). I’d just like to see someone new at the top. Or even an old team from my childhood (I wouldn’t object to seeing the Cowboys or 49ers return to the top, for example).

OR wouldn’t it be cool to see a team who has never won put it together and go all the way. A Cardinals-Chargers Super Bowl or a Seahawks-Browns? Networks might not love it, but you’ve gotta admit, it’d be something different!
