“Batman… Batman… Can somebody tell me what kind of a world we live in, where a man dressed up as a *bat* gets all of my press?”
Just in time for the summer movie blockbuster season, we have return of the bat.
Oh, yeah, and there is the next installment of that “Dark Knight” thing, too. But, what I am talking about are real bats…man. Not BatMAN. I mean as in small flying mammals.
A colony of these creative creatures have made their home in the area around the attic vent on the west end of our house. A ha…that explains that curious mess in the driveway below…
Bats in the belfry!
Our neighbor found a bat on her property and called a humane wildlife extraction expert. I guess she wanted them to inspect her property and make sure there wasn’t a colony of bats roosting in HER belfry!
A thorough inspection, somehow, led the two of them to our house (dumb luck? Excellent deduction? Or the pile of debris?). And, voila, he found ‘em.
What a random location – somewhere between the siding of our house and a screened vent to the attic. Wonder why they chose that spot? Do you think the bat colony sent an explorer or two out and one of them came back exclaiming “Man, have I found a place for you?!”
Whatever led the to our house, now, the plan is simple. We have to get them out.
The bat removal expert installs a one-way door. This, in essence, allows them to leave the nest but they can’t come back in. So, one-by-one, they’ll exit. Once they’re all out, he comes back and permanently seals up all possible orifaces that might attract these clever creatures.
As an aside, the bat expert commented to Lisa that he imagined we had noticed fewer mosquitos around and, you know, it’s really true. Bats can ingest hundreds of mosquitos when they go out hunting each night. Of course, they aren’t selective. They can eat ‘good bugs,’ ‘bad bugs’ and ‘neutral bugs.’
But it is true, we have noticed very few mosquitos around our place recently.
Whether that is good luck or happenstance, the bat colony must go. And step one of the humane removal process begins tomorrow.
Or in other words, this will be a new twist on the old line “You can check out but you may never leave.”
In this case it’ll be more like “You’ve already checked in and you can leave…but you can only leave once!”
Or put another way, “Don’t let the (one-way) door hit you on the way out!”
