If you’re still struggling with dinner plans for Valentine’s Day, Yahoo has a list that is just for you. No matter where you are located tonight, as you read Coach Jeff’s Blog, Yahoo has a ranking your state interms of its deliciousness; fast food style.
Fifty choices just for you…and your significant other. Or maybe you’re looking for something more upscale on Saturday (understandably so).
I’ve written on similar ‘countdowns’ before but this wound seemed especially yummy. Yahoo has posted a blog ranking states from #50 (Vermont) to #1 (Texas) based on each state’s collection of fast food eateries. The survey was actually published by Thrillist.com (a website that focuses on food and drink),
There are five basic qualifications in the survey. I won’t belabor the point by repeating them here. To summarize: the bigger, the better and the more prolific your state’s offerings are, the higher you rank in the countdown.
For the record, our own Volunteer State did quite well in the countdown – if this is, indeed, a list where you hope to excel. Tennessee ranked #12 in the survey (just behind Virginia, the home of Five Guys) and just ahead of Florida (with The Happiest Place on Earth…or is that Disneyland? Note to self – Happiest Place = California; Disney World = Magic Kingdom = Florida).
We move on.
Regarding Tennessee’s place in the survey, we actually got dinged by the recent move of the Krystal corporation from Tennessee to Georgia. Krystal cited the millions of dollars in travel expenses they could save by flying from Hartsfield-Jackson rather than the Chattanooga airport. An article from the Chattanooga Times-Free Press details the recent relocation.
Anyway, when the Krystal folks took a sackful of their stuff to Georgia, we slipped in the countdown.
Many of the noteworthy national fast food establishments were founded in and have home offices located in the other 49 states. Some of the ones frequently noted are establishments we have enjoyed during various family vacations.
When we were in Arizona in August, for example, we sampled the famous In-N-Out Burger. We also enjoyed the venerable Texas-based Whataburger on that trip (I much preferred the Whataburger to In-N-Out). And on other trips, we have enjoyed other regional delicacies featured in the article, including: Culver’s (near MTSU), Skyline (in Cincinnati), and Five Guys (at L’Enfant Plaza in D.C. – or at Turkey Creek, take your pick).
Eating something unique – a Whataburger rather than, say, a Krystal burger – is part of the fun of travel. And whereas you can get a Frosty from a Wendy’s in almost any community, a concrete from Culver’s is just a little, well, different.
Last year, part of the fun of being in Europe was eating real English fish-n-chips near Piccadilly Circus in London or buying crepes from an Algerian-run shoppe near L’opera Garnier in Paris. Those meals are memorable and remind you that you aren’t from around those parts.
I’m not sure where we’ll go for this year’s vacation – it won’t be as exotic as our London/Paris trip and it won’t be cross-country like going to Arizona – but no matter where we wind up, we’ll try to have a meal or two at some establishment we don’t have in the Greater Farragut area.
Wherever that is, we have this list to serve as our guide for some excellent choices along the way.
