The sun is setting on the Summer of ‘14 for Roger the cat and I think he must sense this is true.
As Holly headed off to grad school and as Paul prepares to go back for his sophomore year at college, Rog started to put a little distance between himself and his young humans.
I don’t know how animals know these things. They just do. They seem to have a 6th sense. He always seems to know when nasty weather is brewing, for example; he usually knows this the weather radio signals an oncoming storm.
Roger can take one whiff of the early morning air when you open the door for him and within one second, he knows whether or not it is safe to go outside. In some cases he just opts for the relative safety of the screened in back porch.

I guess it’s not surprising then that his mood over the last week or so has been extra aloof.
- No naps in laps
- Limited Petting
- More time downstairs
Perhaps this makes the upcoming separation, for him, a little easier to take.
As the seasons change, so will his mood. He will warm up to the two of us again. He’ll even enjoy a lap nap again. Summer will turn to fall and he’ll seek the physical - and emotional - warmth of his humans. Fall will morph into winter and this will increase.
The ones will return home from time to time and he’ll greet them with his cool cat demeanor; his version of a head nod and questioning “S'up?”
But the important thing, from Rog’s perspective, is he’ll do it on his terms.
