A mystery began to unfold at our house over the weekend and we haven’t made much progress in our attempts to solve it.
Sometime Saturday morning, a bag of cookies appeared on our front porch with a note attached. The front side of the note said, in Big Orange writing: “Heat up.”
On the back of the note was scribed: “peanut, chocolate and oatmeal cookies. enjoy them!”
Inside a Ziplock® bag were four homemade cookies (presumably containing peanut, chocolate and oatmeal).
Holly immediately went to work trying to decipher who might have baked this enigmatic confection. Paul has been away at college for a week now and we figure that anyone who MIGHT have been inclined to bake cookies for him would know he wouldn’t be here to accept the gift.
So, having ruled out her brother’s cronies, Holly started checking out the alibis of her pals. One by one, she crossed them off the list. Some were out of town, others were at work and a few, still, denied preparing the treat. Their denials were believable.
Soon, she was thoroughly buffaloed in her efforts to track down the culprit.
Recently, we had baked some brownies for new neighbors so we thought it was at least possible the cookies came from across the street. That was our best guess.
Just then, we put notifications about the riddle out via Facebook.
We feel it is necessary to find out the identity of the baker in order to ensure food safety. Otherwise, we plan to toss the cookies (so to speak).
Holly’s Facebook post didn’t net any results but the one I circulated brought some interesting tidbits. Two other people in our neighborhood got similar baggies full of treats recently. One family ate the cookies and reported they are quite tasty.
This news doesn’t end the puzzle, of course. I think it does rule out friends and family as the gift-givers. I think what it probably means is either some sort of ‘pay it forward’ random act of kindness OR a fun-loving prank.
In either case, if we don’t know who baked the cookies, we do know who won’t eat the cookies – us. Considering the possibilities, you just can’t be too careful.
