So…Twinkies are set to return to the shelves of a quickie mart near you next week. We can all breath a sigh of relief.

You might recall the mass hysteria that took place last fall when labor strife and bankruptcy eventually forcec a closing of Hostess Brands, the manufacturer of the venerable sponge cakes. There were runs on various retailers and snack cake aficionados stocked up; hoarding the treats in order to get through the long, cold winter.
The disappearance of Twinkies last winter caused a little consternation in the Farragut High School theatre world as well in the confection community. The FHSers were taking a production of the one act play, Finger Painting in a Murphy Bed, to state competition. Twinkies play a key role, as a prop, in this show.
So, the lack of these sponge cakes in the market place required some ingenuity. Fortunately, there were options.
But now, with Hostess having been purchased by new owners, there should be no such future void. Last week, we learned that the brand is coming back from the void and by next week, any enthusiast should be able to find their treat. Further, production should be in full swing and store shelves full stocked in time for the first waves of back to school shopping.
Among other uses, Twinkies frequently find their ways into school backpacks and lunch boxes.
If you’re not a confection consumer or a pre-planning parent, maybe you could just celebrate this small victory for your neighbors. As for me, the topic doesn’t do much for me one way or the other. But, it did provide some inspiration for a couple blog posts, so there’s that.
Now, if someone could find a way to bring back Chipos…
