My sister faced the horrible reality, today, of saying goodbye to a cherished member of the family. Her dog, Sadie, passed away today after battling illness for the past few months.
It’s never easy saying goodbye to one of our furry friends. They bring us so much love and comfort and companionship. They’re an irreplaceable part of the family.
I prayed today for my sister to have courage and to find some comfort. I know it won’t be easy as she adores her pets as many folks do.
Speaking of which, while Holly has been in France, she tells us there are two hardships she has faced:
- Lack of American food
- Lack of cats
- Oh, and a serious lack of…cats
In Normandy, she says there seems to be a shortage of cats. We’ve done what we could do to help her by shipping a few of her favorite American treats along in some care packages. Unfortunately, we can’t help her with the second part! (Or the third).
She was excited, recently, when she told us that she had booked a reservation in Paris at the cat café. There, she will have the opportunity for feline interaction.
Naturally, every Skype session includes a close-up of Rog. He seems unmoved, however. Even though he can hear Holly’s voice, we feel sure he is convinced it is a trick. After all, the silver box – the computer – doesn’t pass the smell test.
I have been somewhat impressed with Roger’s patience this winter. He has tolerated the cold. He couldn’t understand the many visits of that wet white blanket on the front lawn. But, he hasn’t beaten us up too much over it.
And to reward good behavior, Lisa found him a new toy. It’s a plastic ball that dispenses food as it turns. So, in essence, a self-determining creature such as Roger is able to feed himself. I’m sure that feels good.
Pets are amazing.
Meanwhile, at my sister’s house, I’m sure she will snuggle up with her kitties tonight as well to reaffirm her love for them and to reassure them in the wake of Sadie’s passing. They’ll surely return her affection and that will be a much-needed bit of warmth for her.
After all, who doesn’t find a bit of comfort from the love we receive from our four-legged friends?
