Much Ado…About Something

Think about the great sitcom families of the 80s and 90s – the Cosbys, the Keatons, the Bundys. Imagine them all together – or characters that remind you of them. Now, imagine them all together on the stage at Farragut High School.

There’s Much Ado…About Something…going on this weekend in the Ferguson Theatre at FHS.

The Farragut High School Play Production Class presentation of William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” will be staged on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 and during a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

Directed by David Crutcher (from a cutting by Dr. David McTier), the FHS version translates well to this interpretation.

“The worlds portrayed in the turn of the century sitcoms were colorful, vibrant, and alive with animated action and characters. Realism was often sacrificed for the sake of plot, character, or even convenience,” Crutcher says. “With a world full of love, broadly animated characters, plotting and scheming, and clearly drawn lines between protagonists and antagonists in mind, this production will be set in a fictional 80’s or 90’s sitcom called Much Ado About Nothing.”

Crutcher adds that the production will be set to the soundtrack of 1980s and 90s as well. The set design, like the music, will be very colorful.

“I see Much Ado About Nothing as episodic, wacky, and animated. The characters are lively, self-interested, conniving, and eccentric. This is the very essence of the people, places, and plots in the turn of the century sitcoms.”
