Spring Break

It’s Spring Break in our town and that means folks are scattering to beach destinations to the south and east.  And, of course, yesterday was officially the first day of spring.

Around here, it’s so warm, it felt like the first day of summer!

I took a couple days off to work (play) in the yard and it felt great. We mulched, planted, pruned and just basically spruced up the outside of the house and yard. I love how everything looks this year when everything springs to life – flowers blooming, birds chirping and Roger romping around the yard.

A funny thing happens this time of year. It’s a time of transition.

With my two favorite college basketball teams now officially eliminated from post-season play, my interest level in March Madness has plummeted. Meanwhile, I have started dialing in a few spring training box scores as we march closer and closer to Opening Day of the MLB season.

Last week, everyone was excited about the notion of Peyton Manning coming to play for the Titans; now folks are adjusting to the idea he will be a Denver Bronco.

In my son’s world, it’s time to focus on the rite of passage sort of things that take place in the spring. Over the weekend, he asked his steady girlfriend to go to the FHS prom with him. He did it with pure Paul panache. We drove the ‘jacket truck’ to his girlfriend’s house. He took 5 pieces of posterboard and taped them to the side of the truck. He spelled out P-R-O-M-? (Roger oversaw Paul’s work).

When we arrived at her house, he got her folks involved with the plan. At the appointed time, the parent ‘papparatzi’ was in place when she came out to see the question.

For the record, her answer was ‘yes.’

Prom plans. Flowers blooming. Baseball spring training. Opening Day on the way.

It is officially spring. We’ve broken out of the winter doldrums. The days are warm and sunny and happy times are here.
