The other night, as I was falling asleep, I started thinking back to past Super Bowls. As we head toward tomorrow’s Super Bowl XLVI, I am feeling very indifferent about this match-up.
Either way, we’re going to have a repeat champ and unless you are a fan of either the Giants OR Patriots, it’s kind of hard to get all jazzed up about that. You enjoy the game for the event it is (along with all the food, commercials and halftime entertainment). Of course, for the media it’s a ratings bonanza - Northeast vs. Northeast.
For a Tennessee Titans fan, it’s just not that appealing of a match-up. Meanwhile, our brush with near-victory in Super Bowl XXXIV is getting further and further away in the rearview mirror.
All of that started me to thinking of when I was a kid. My #1 team, as I told you, was the Raiders. My back-up team was Dallas. Then, later, when I could no longer root for Dallas - after they unceremoniously dumped Coach Landry, I showed them. I started rooting for San Fran!
I still like those Bay Area teams OK…but I’m a Titans fan all the way.
Anyway, out of 45 Super Bowls, really, most of my favorites took place in the 1st 30. I haven’t had a LOT to root for in the last 15 or so years. Most of my favorites come out of my childhood, teen years and college. But, I thought it would be fun, anyway, to list my Top 10 Super Bowls. You probably have an entirely different 10. That’s part of the fun.
Hey, everyone else is doing it. Why not me.
So on the eve of Super Bowl XLVI, here is my Top X!
X. Super Bowl XXXVI - Patriots over Rams
Two years removed from the heartbreak of losing such a close game to them in the Super Bowl, I enjoyed watching the tables be turned against the Rams.
IX. Super Bowl XLIV - Saints over Colts
The most modern ‘big game’ to make my list. It was fun to watch the Saints win after all that city had been through.
VIII. Super Bowl XXIV - 49ers over Broncos
What’s not to love here? One of my favorite teams wins in a romp and my #1 least favorite team gets blown out.
VII. Super Bowl XXIII - 49ers over Bengals
Great game. One of the most exciting. Fantastic finish.
VI. Super Bowl XV - Raiders over Eagles
I remember watching the 1st half of this game from my part-time job. By the time I got home to see the 2nd half, the competitive part of game was basically over.
V. Super Bowl XVIII - Raiders over Redskins
Everyone in the country seemed to be picking Washington to win this game. But the Raiders had other ideas and won in a blow-out.
IV. Super Bowl XII - Cowboys over Broncos
Fun to watch America’s Team crush the Orange Crush.
III. Super Bowl XXIX - 49ers over Chargers
By this game, I had fully become a Niners fan 100%, so it was great to see them win. Steve Young is still one of my all-time favorite players.
II. Super Bowl XXXIV - Rams over Titans
What an amazing game…even though we came up just one yard short of pulling this one out, it still ranks, in my book, as one of the best games ever (if not THE best). Still, every time I see replays of that final play, I am rooting for Kevin Dyson to get that one last yard!
I. Super Bowl XI - Raiders over Vikings
After years of frustration - losses to the Steelers and coming up JUST short - it was great to celebrate the Raiders ultimate win for John Madden and the crew!
