Football Time in Tennessee

I’ve always said you can tell on Sunday morning whether the Vols won or not on Saturday night.

If you are in the supermarket, in the mall or at Sunday church services, there is usually an electricity in the air after a Vols win the night before; there’s a bit of a pall if they didn’t.

This morning - after days and days of sunny, blue skies around the Tennessee Valley - we awoke to gloomy, cloudy skies. Oh by the way, the Vols lost last night to Georgia 20-12.

In this case, it’s not JUST the losing. It’s losing THIS game. Most prognosticators have us losing a few games along the way. The next two games, for example, look like really tough match-ups.

Last night, though, seemed like a winnable game. Win that one and there were really good chances of a 2-2 run through the toughest stretch on the schedule. Lose it and then you’re looking at the possibility of a 6-6 season (which just won’t cut it in Vol Nation). Win this game and you could do the math toward a possible 8-4 outcome and a really good bowl; lose it and you’re talking some non-descript, mid-December bowl game in some city you didn’t really think of when it comes to sunny, winter football destinations.

The Georgia game was a coin flip game. It could’ve gone either way. But, last night we called ‘heads’ and it came up 'tails.’ The Vols could just never establish a running game last night and they couldn’t stop Georgia on the ground. So, the Dawgs now have an inside track to a decent season while we are picking up the pieces.

I think Vol Nation is behind Coach Dooley and they like him a lot. They want him to succeed. It just doesn’t look like this year is going to be our year when talking about 'Football Time in Tennessee.’
