Editor’s Note: Tonight I thought it might be fun to blog my observations during the MLB All Star Game. If you’re watching, too, feel free to join in!
8:00 p.m. - Introduction of starting line-ups. Really enjoy this. Kind of has a throw-back/old school sort of feel about it. Also, I love how fans of every MLB team get to see ‘their guy’ (or guys) when he’s introduced. I felt that way when Chipper Jones was introduced and got a rousing ovation from the K.C. faithful.
8:09 p.m. - Interesting (if a bit long) version of the National Anthem. Of course, you know you’re not in just ANY house when there is a teenager on the other side of the room harmonizing with the singer.
8:18 p.m. - 1st pitch! A.L. has a very definite Texas/Yankees flavor.
8:21 p.m. - First hit belongs to Melky Cabrera. Can’t help but think of his fans, the Melk Men, that we saw earlier in the summer in San Fran.
8:33 p.m. - Wow. Did NOT see this coming. 4-0 lead for N.L. in the bottom of the first. Verlander really struggling. Huge hit for Sandoval to drive in three runs. Now, he scores on the Uggla hit to make it 5-0.
8:56 p.m. - Feels like the game is now settling into a more normal rhythm after 1 ½ innings. Just an unreal start to the game. (As an N.L. fan, I’m not complaining, mind you).
9:04 p.m. - Hard to believe we’re only in the 3rd inning. Am wondering how many young fans will be able to make it all the way to the end of the game (am wondering if I will be able to make it all the way to the end of the game).
9:22 p.m. - Now 8-0. Amazing. And somewhere on the West Coast, I imagine a group of young men - dressed in bright white - with white hats and glass bottles - celebrating a blast from their hero.
9:30 p.m. - Taking a break from the action for just a second as Nats’ phenom Stephen Strasburg takes the mound…I was just thinking back to when we visited Kauffman Stadium in 2009. We really enjoyed our visit there. It was a great night and an enjoyable place to see a ballgame.
9:50 p.m. - Helpless feeling for the kid in left field. And now the A.L. is making a little noise in the 5th. And…nothing to show for it.
10:01 p.m. - Wonderful reaction from the K.C. fans as Chipper comes to bat. And a great shout out from the Royals’ P.A. with “Crazy Train” (his walk-up song back at home at Turner Field). And a base hit for Chipper. Great moment.
10:10 p.m. - UT alumnus and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey now on the mound. He could’ve easily been the starting pitcher (no offense intended to Memphis native Matt Cain). Anyway, great to see him on the mound. What a great season he has had thus far.
10:26 p.m. - “God Bless America.” Getting kind of late for any sort of A.L. Rally.
10:30 p.m. - Nice ovation from the home crowd in K.C. for Billy Butler.
10:46 p.m. - Excellent timing for Braves closer Craig Kimbrel striking out two batters while Chipper is interviewed about his All Star Game experience. Nice showing for the Bravos tonite.
11:20 p.m. - Ballgame! MVP is Melky. The Melk Men rejoice!
N.L 8-0.
