The minute I start thinking of one, my mouth starts to water. Literally. It’s the darndest thing.
I don’t have that reaction to steak…or pizza…or chocolate. Or ice cream purchased from the ice cream man.
Obviously, this goes way back to my childhood when the fruit candies, Starburst, were initially marketed and distributed to the American public. To this day, Starburst are my favorite candies. I can even remember when the packaging was white instead of yellow and when the fourth candy flavor was lime rather than cherry.
But cherry was introduced, lime was eliminated, the packaging became yellow and Starburst took over as a top American candy. It’s sort of like when (example of band member being kicked out) and the (insert band name) took off as a super band.
Throughout my childhood and adolescence, the ‘fab four’ Starburst flavors ruled. When my folks would bring home a bag of them occasionally after a grocery shopping run, that was a special treat.
And then later, (company name) began to introduce variations. Tropical flavors. Summertime flavors. Then, a couple years ago, they rolled out the ‘All red’ package (featuring watermelon, strawberry, cherry and punch!).
Recently, the ‘morph’ flavors have gotten my attention – with inbed flavor buds that cause cherry to transform into cherry-lime; and orange to become orange-strawberry.
Starbust, for me, are a guilty pleasure. I don’t eat them very often. When I do, however, I really really enjoy them. I’m sure it is a throwback to my childhood days.
And when you are talking childhood, then everything is special – especially the fab four - orange, lemon, strawberry and lime…which morphed into cherry…in the classic yellow pack!
