Many thanks to the kind folks who sent me well wishes late last week.
I was out of commission, so to speak, as I underwent a minor surgical procedure. Things went well with the operation and my recovery has begun. Fortunately, the doctor did not have to remove my Charley Horse, Adam’s Apple or Funny Bone.
Of course, like all patients heading into surgery, I probably did have Butterflies in Stomach.
Not to worry, however, the professionals at UT Medical Center did a wonderful job. In at 6, out by noon. Can’t beat that. And everyone – from the orderly who greeted me, to the nurses and nurse anesthetist to the anesthesiologist and my surgeon himself – was professional, efficient and kind.
In short, the minor operation was a great success.
I was thinking about the board game, itself, after my surgery. I remembered how I was never particularly good at playing Operation. My hand was a little too shaky; my patience just not steady. I was usually bested by some other family member or close friend.
It’s probably a good thing that I never wished to pursue a career as a surgeon.
I did, however, have the opportunity to write about surgical procedures during my time as a member of the PR staff at Children’s Hospital.
On both of those occasions, we were welcoming a new procedure or practitioner to the region.
Over the years, I’ve covered sporting events, town meetings, political campaigns as a journalist. Later, as a PR professional, I have had many unique assignments over the years. Nothing quite matches my two times of observing surgical procedures and writing about them.
Nothing would.
As for last week, I feel quite sure that my own operation was fairly routine. I doubt, for example, that any members of the UTKMC PR team were on-hand to document my progress.
Still, as I received the warm interactions of the staff members, I was definitely made to feel special. My experience was so positive that I went online, found a link for a comment card and I sent my kudos.
Seemed like it was the least I could do under the circumstances.
